Incredible Shrinking Chip
The two EPROM (Eraseable Programmable Read-Only Memory) chips below are
identical in capacity and speed, but the one on the left is approximately ten years older.
A nice example of how much smaller chips have become in the last decade..!

It's quite a while since I actually bought an EPROM (rather than
scavenging one from dead equipment).... I was somewhat surprised when I recently received
a new 2 megabit (256Kbyte) chip to see how much smaller the die was compared to devices
I'd previously seen.
Estimated die areas : 11.2 x 7.2mm = 80.64mm2, 3.3 x 2.5mm =
8.25mm2
(The writing on the new one was laser-marked so I had to tweak the image
to make it readable)
