Do we reckon its the same one - the buyer of the original listing had now realised its a pile of junk?!

Could be - listing wording is identical, although this shows a drill not mentioned in the old one.

(I need something to selectively squirt conformal coating on some boards, and I'm exceedingly tired of doing it by hand... £300 and a day's fiddling doesn't seem like a bad trade)
Any guesses what this thing speaks, control-wise? Although I'm perfectly happy to just drive the steppers directly, to be honest)

My guess would be RS232 - the question is where is the nasty rectangular-to-angle conversion done. Driving steppers direct will involve quite a lot of maths.
Would be interested to see some internal pics when you get it.

Would a Makerbot or one of those kitform CNC machines not be easier?
