You will find you need to occasionally mess with the thresholds in the CDF - the RV doesn't deal well with varying ambient levels so you ideally want to use it somewhere consistent, i.e. away from windows. At some point I intend to replace the illuminators with bright ones and stop down the camera lenses or add filters to make it less fussy.
You will also see some variation between parts from different manufacturers, particularly capacitors.
I wouldn't recommend tweaking the thresholds in the cal menu as a fix for a flaky part as it will effectively shift the thresholds for all parts.
Tweaking it in the CDF also means you can use the "run time test" option in the CDF to quickly tweak the parameters and see the effect.
