RV Hardware / Feeder issue solved.
October 23, 2015, 08:27:29 PM
I had some feeder issues over the last few days and it may help others if they have similar problems
some of it is obvious, some less so.  sorry no pictures as I was too busy trying to fix the problem.

The first issue was that I bought some capacitors that were too tall for the feeder guide plates.

I found phonoplug's post on the forum with pics of some custom feeder guide plates, unfortunately for a different feeder design to mine.
but, knowing they could be modified, and since I have a milling machine, no excuse not to try, I decided to have a go...

I used a feeder I had not been using as it never worked very well, stripped it down, machined the plate (10mm end mill) and re-assembled in a couple of hours, ( with new nitrile belts) all relatively smoothly.

When I came to test with the feedertest utility, it didn't work very well, the pins seemed to grab the (plastic) tape and not retract properly.

First I cleaned the pins and bearing blocks with IPA, flooding the area and working the pins thoroughly..  I then dried it with hot air before retesting.
The cleaning made little difference, but I did spot the problem.

The pins did not line up correctly with the holes in the tape, they were well off centre and because of this they were binding.
I had not altered anything that would affect pin alignment so the problem must have been there since before I obtained the feeder last year.

Re-alignment was easy enough, just a couple of allen set screws to loosen then tighten...  I averaged the error so that the outer lanes have about the same offset but in opposite directions..

The big issue came when I reassembled and tested..  the main moving carriage now fouled on the inside of the cover...  to anyone who has had these apart, the left side of the carriage is machined away even to part way through the oilite block on the left hand side to clear the case..    It looks like it should have been machined even more...

The long term solution would be to machine a bit more off the side of the carriage, but in the interim, I refitted the side of the feeder with a couple of washers to space it out.

The feeder now works perfectly, probably better than it did new !

If you have a feeder that misbehaves, check that the pins line up with the tape sprocket holes!

Yep I've done those before.

Brilliant,
I'll stick with it knowing they can be picked..  my No2 is a bit tatty so I'll clean up the end a bit..
Thanks

RV Hardware / Picking tactile switches

Has anyone got any tips for picking up tactile switches with the RV ?
Which nozzle to use etc?

I'm not having much success.

this sort of thing   http://p.globalsources.com/IMAGES/PDT/B1035108293/Tact-Switch.jpg

I'm wondering if a special nozzle with a tube to fit over the button and inside the 4 pips might work better.

I don't know how much help I can offer as my skillset isn't in the domain of PC software.
Contacting the software guy could potentially be more help than any logic analyser...  ;)
I'll second that !
I can't help much programming wise, but I have a complete and working spare machine to play with that doesn't need to be placing chips if that helps.

I decided it was worth investing in a reasonably priced full set of spares and bid on it!

General SMT / Stencilling with brass sheet
April 07, 2015, 03:04:39 PM
just in case anyone hasn't thought of it already,
if you don't have proper stencil making facilities and need a stencil quickly,
try etching thin brass sheet..

I only use it on small boards, up to about A6 size

produced by the same toner transfer process I use for pcbs..

I've used a brass stencil for several thousand boards with no signs yet of wear..

5 thou thickness seems to work well, not too much paste and stiff enough to not need a frame

I'm now pretty much hooked on solder printing rather than stencilling. I'd say it's worth trying to get the machine running as a printer. (Or, if you part it out, shout, I may be interested in the auger pump :)
Having a surrounding cover strikes me as a good plan - I have to heat the entire room up to something tropical to get good dispensing through a 26ga needle, which is about as big as I can get away with to do QFNs (0.25mm ID - blowing solder paste through that seems quite hard).

Replacing the electronics / software shouldn't be that traumatic, if you're struggling to get the existing stuff to run. Not sure how much support there is for that machine.

After having a bit of a play with it, I'm definitely going to move to more modern servo drives..  probably leadshine ..  hoping the DCS303 will be man enough..  time to put a meter on it and see what the motors draw!

If I'm swapping the electronics out, I may try to make it a dispenser / drill / 3D printer ..  it makes some sense as I am very limited for space and the mechanicals are pretty good.

I bought one of these from eBay,

www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Printed-circuit-board-machine-CAMALOT-1414-table-top-dispenser-/151563646537

even if it doesn't work, its a lot of hardware for the $..  multistart ballscrews, servo motors,  auger dispenser

and when I picked it up, the guy showed me another he has another that looks to be in similar condition..

contact me if you want contact details before it goes on eBay.. next week

I was tempted by the    3x12+3x16
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Versatronics-feeders-/271674459366?var=570510442055

on the grounds that that is the one I end up swapping components on.. !

although short of the spool rollers, the main mechanism works perfectly and has less wear then the one I already had.

I think that confirms it definitely doesn't come with any feeders. They are asking £395 each for them separately...

A little steep - the look pretty old, some with noticeable rust

So what's the going rate Mike, for a 3x12+3x16 ?  I could do with an extra one.

Ambient lighting has been a problem too. I need to get this set up
in a more consistent location :(

I'm very much a beginner at this but I have found that both fluorescent and LED lights cause more of a problem than ye olde incandescent bulbs or daylight.
It may be that the the dark perspex lets through some light frequencies more than others..
I have a dark cloth that I drape over the machine when I am working at night with artificial light.

I also added a self-adhesive LED strip stuck up under the top frame tube, powered from the PC 12V on a switch to help visibility when setting up. - works a treat and only cost pennies!

I want to place some Luxeon Rebel LEDs..

Any tips on how to pick them up and image them ?

Can I pick up on the flat part with a standard nozzle, or do I need to make a shaped nozzle to keep the centre in the centre of the camera.

btw.. on a completely different subject, I found that 6oz fishing weights make ideal weights on the waste end of the tape, hooked on with paper clips..!
