For Sale/Wanted, Suppliers / Main control box
October 11, 2024, 12:09:38 PM
Hi have a control box for sale. This has 3 RSP-320-36 supplies in it. I have not used it for a while but I am sure this is the one I used as my daily driver for my machine. Having these supplies in it means you can do merge moves on placement without worry of voltage dips. I think it is one of the reasons placement was actually quite accurate for me.

The supplies themselves cost £50+VAT new alone.

I am sure it is all working but it is sold as seen. I cant upload any images as it says site if full, contact Mike. If you want to message me your email address I can send images.

I have a PC for sale. It won't have a hard drive in it so it's a computer to setup from scratch but it has a DSP card and the graphics grabber card in it. Open to offers. Looks to be in good condition.

Make me an offer.

RV Hardware / CL feeders on RV
March 25, 2024, 01:29:06 PM
During the process of building my OpenPNP machine I decided to get my new feeders working with the RV. I have jobs I still do on it and it's only the feeders that presented the biggest issue to me. Waiting for a few bits of air pipe and couplers but the mechanics is done and the electronics.

Hopefully will be testing it by the end of the day

RV Hardware / Scara
December 10, 2023, 05:51:06 PM
Hi.

In my progress with openpnp I came across scara which I think is the coordinate system style the rv uses.

It seems you could use a duet3d xc board which would drive the current stepper drivers and enable the rv to be used with openpnp. The duet board supports scara.

The only thing I think might be an issue is the calibration map the Rv has to do to calibrate itself. I am not sure if that would be easy to implement.

Shame really as it would transform these machines.

For Sale/Wanted, Suppliers / Lots of RV spares
November 26, 2023, 06:57:35 PM
I have posted on here that I am building an OpenPNP based machine. I have quite a few spare parts for RV1 and RV4 machines that I will now look to sell on to people that could do with them.

I have some RV1 and RV4 machines that would best be used for spares. The RV1 machines I think are fully working but these machines are old and likely need a service etc and might have some faults I do not know about so they are best being sold to someone that knows what they are doing or would enjoy the project.

I even have full sets of motor drive modules.

Let me know if anyone wants anything.

Other low-end Pick/Place machines / OpenPNP
November 26, 2023, 06:49:27 PM
I have started to purchase some parts to build my own machine. I think OpenPNP is mature enough to be useful. I feel there are many benefits despite the new learning curve it will hopefully be enjoyable.

Does anyone have any experience with these machines?

RV Hardware / resin printed nozzles
July 29, 2023, 09:22:41 PM
I have a resin printer now and am considering printing some nozzles with it. I think it should be good enough and so cheap it won't matter about breakages. I reckon they will cost pennies each.

Do we have stl files of the nozzles?

Anyone interested in some if I print them?

RV Hardware / RV4s rewire
November 25, 2022, 09:35:51 AM
Well I have a machine with intermittent operation of movement. I changed all parts other than the wiring in the arm. I even replaced the wiring in the head to the arm. The problem is with the rotation of the nozzle. It skips steps and it's intermittent.

I am wondering if the best course of action at this stage would be replace the loom in the column leading to the arm. Anyone done anything like this. or worked on this wiring loom? Any recommendations for reliable wire to use to replace it?

Any info/suggestions welcome.

Anyone ever used one? Been told they are a lot faster than RV but use most of the same parts.

Hi, my RV4s sounds like the stepper motor that rotates the pickup is missing steps. Video link attached.

https://youtu.be/_QtO8nigj3A

It feels like a harness issue to me. I replaced the stepper motor and it made no difference so it's not the stepper motor. I replaced the connector in the stepper motor head and soldered the wires together. This made no difference. The issue is intermittent as well which makes me feel like its a wiring issue. I am just wondering if anyone has had this fault and can confirm what they did to fix it? My thought is to replace the harness that goes from the stepper motor to the arm body where the circuit board is mounted.

In case anyone is looking for a wireless keyboard and mousepad, I bought a LOGITECH K400 Plus despite it not stating win98 support and it appears the mouse pad and keyboard both work with Win98 without the need for any special Logitech drivers.

Hi, most of the time when I load up RV Place the camera has some weird offset. A black band appears at the bottom. I believe this is related to the PC and wondering if it is a hardware or software issue. Maybe I installed the wrong camera driver? Has anyone experienced this issue?

I have attached an image showing the black band at the bottom. It does affect the position of placement.

RV Hardware / 0402 placement tips
September 06, 2021, 11:46:45 AM
Mike mentioned he had placed some 0402 parts with an RV. What experience do people have with placement of 0402 parts? Does the machine manage it okay? Do you need to slow the movement down to get accurate placement? I never realistically thought the machine could do below 0603.

RV Hardware / Feeder controller board redesign
August 31, 2021, 12:23:17 PM
Hi all.

I invested some time on trying to get a feeder working better with plastic tape. I hated the noise the stepper motor drive assembly made and components moving around is really annoying. I lost all confidence I could get decent performance. Paper tape and larger capacitors on plastic tape seemed to be okay but 0603 and sot23 sized components are just a nightmare.

I have prototyped an initial idea based on a new stepper motor driver using a TMC2208 which offers super smooth movement. I also believe one thing that might have improved things is that when the pin moves the tape forward, I think sometimes it rubs on the tape as it drops down again. So before the pin drops down, backing the pin off slightly appears to help.

Attached is a video of the new movement. You can see it is almost silent compared to the original feeder. I will finalise code to get one feeder working properly and put it on test. I think I shall then get a board layout done.

RV Hardware / Support for other feeders
July 14, 2021, 09:10:27 PM
Hi, I did a bit of work to read the feeder indexing commands from an RV and support an alternative feeder.

This is the first version I have built to get a feel for how well it will work. The Arduino mega with shield can support 48 lanes which are decoded from RV Bank and Lane data.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z8uYMSt6EE

This feeder built is linked below and I adapted the code to read in RV indexing commands on one UART and feed it into the existing code to drive the appropriate feeder.

https://www.docs.mgrl.de/maschine:pickandplace:feeder:0816feeder:mechanics

Hopefully I will progress further to get something robust enough to get some proper testing done on it.

Hi

I have an RV4s that I have just started using. It has a weird fault to it that sometimes it just loses its z position. It does not drop like I have read elsewhere but does the opposite. It seems to lose steps and ends up thinking it is lower than it is.

So it will be picking parts up fine and dropping them down fine and then somewhat randomly it will stop dropping down enough to pick are part up from a feeder. I will stop the job, start again and it finds the position no problem.

Any thoughts?

RV Hardware / Yamaha feeder interface
February 25, 2021, 12:46:25 PM
Hi, just thinking out loud. The biggest issue I have with the RV is the feeder handling plastic tape. With 0603 leds the feeder vibrates and the parts literally filp upside down. Sometimes the tape lifts and the pin misses the holes. This is with a grey feeder.

I was wondering how difficult it might be to interface samsung/clone electronic feeders with the RV. It almost acts as a win win situation. Better feeder support and then if the time comes to upgrade the machine the feeders most likely will work with a new machine or can be sold on.

One thought was to take the electronics board out of a feeder and use the signal from the solenoid output as a trigger to the electronic feeders? I was thinking the RS485 protocol probably is trivial though to back engineer.

Anyone got any thoughts on this or maybe there are ways to sort out the support of plastic tape with the current feeders. I find them a pain really.

RV Software / Repeatable placement issues
July 28, 2019, 05:30:30 PM
Hi all

Does anyone have trouble with components losing their bias data?

Usually if I have placed components on a board, then exit out and adjust a bias, sometimes thats when things can go wrong. Also it was recommended to me to re-center the camera position at least once in the morning and then again after lunch. I did that and it threw a few components off. Strange thing was it was just a random couple. Maybe re-centering resets biases sometimes?

Also I wondered if when I load a board and use auto fiducial, sometimes it upsets some component biases. I dont have enough proof but wondered if a board was off by a 2mm say and the software auto corrects, maybe that causes some calculation overflow...

I feel sometimes I am chasing my tale. I have to just sit there a nudge components to ensure they flow.

Does anyone get repeatable placement on say a batch of 50 boards or does every other board end up needing a tweak? If it needs tweaks then so be it but it would be great to know the limits.

Also when I try to change biases I get screen corruption pretty much every time. Is there any specific video card/motherboard hardware or driver setup that limits this. I was told I am running an old software and that later versions fixed it but I am using the latest version from this forum.

Any help would be appreciated as the machine seems to be running well other than me failing to get biases set firmly.

Thanks

Trev
