I would appreciate folks letting me know the actual driver settings they are using for the z axis motor
(the switches on the driver board)
The function selection dipswitch settings (6 way dip switch)
and the step angle selection rotary switch positions ( 2 16 way rotary switches)
just to see if there is any correlation between settings and z axis issues

Ok, have had a look at one of my machines, the easier one of the two to get to, and here are the switch settings from all four boards. I'm not sure which is the Z-axis board, but looking into the box at the component sides of the PCBs, and taking board 1 to be the one located beneath the mains inlet connector, then working across Left to right, we have:
1) DIL switch = 1-3 ON, 4-6 OFF, hex switches = 44
2) DIL switch = 1-3 ON, 4-6 OFF, hex switches = 55
3) DIL switch = 1-3 ON, 4-6 OFF, hex switches = 55
4) DIL switch = 1-3 ON, 4-6 OFF, hex switches = 22
