High-Speed destruction : Exploding wire

Short length of steel guitar-string being vaporised explode_nuke.m1v (2.7MB) 1000 frames/sec

As the camera has limited dynamic range, the aperture had to be set very small to avoid whiting-out for most of the duration, so we have to start in complete blackness (although it was actually daylight).

In the beginning there was darkness....

Then the Destruct-o-tron said "Let there be light..." Unfortunately the camera couldn't cope...

In a scene reminiscent of old nuke test film, the camera begins to recover

The larger blob turns out to be lens flare

Once the main plasma cloud diminishes, we see a shower of burning steel sparks
